Using Verbal Warnings to Help Correct Employee Performance Issues
Disciplinary action or “progressive discipline” is utilized to help you employees to further improve sub-standard job performance. Performance issues addressed with this process tend to be more serious than others addressed using constructive critical feedback. The first step in progressive discipline is termed a Verbal Warning.
Disciplinary action can be used when a worker:
* makes a serious mistake OR
* does not answer constructive critical feedback given more than one times.
Just before using disciplinary action, supervisors and managers must consult, understand and comply with:
* their organization’s policy and procedures
* requirements in collective agreements (in workplaces with unionized employees)
* employment standards or labour regulations inside their area.
Follow these steps when giving a verbal warning.
